Boothbay Harbor, 2025, May Edition

After staying in a rented house for our January trip to the Boothbay area for Fun in the Snow, we were looking forward to our May trip to Topside Inn for Fun in the Sun. Here is a sample of our typical views for the week:

A dense fog almost obscures a boat that is on the water, with early morning light diffused by the fog.

A closer view of the same boat as in the previous picture shows the dim outline of another boat or raft beyond it.

Yes, we had a lot of fog and drizzle (and at times heavy rain). That does create some nice 'mood' photographs and adds some mystery to the scenes.

A red navigation sign sticks out of the water, with fog obscuring the background.

Three lobsterman rafts can dimly be seen through fog.

A tall masted ship is sitting moored to a pier, with most of the view obscured by fog.

Amid the fog, 3 boats can be seen in the water.

A pier extends over the water in the fog, with birds on the railings.

Three Common Eider sit on a rock at low tide in heavy fog.

It also gives the opportunity for some pretty water droplets.

Water droplets on a spiderweb stand out against a foggy background.

Sometimes it is not mysterious, but simply boring.

Solid fog obscures the view behind some of Maine's coastal rocks.

Even in foggy weather on the ocean, work has to get done. We saw many lobstermen or other working fishermen heading out and quickly disappearing from our view.

The lights of a boat can be seen through the fog.

Another worker was the captain of the boat 'Novelty', who delivers workers to Squirrel Island in preparation for the residences opening for the season. We chatted with him one day. He confirmed that the former island manager, who had the adorable Newfoundland dog, had retired.

Sometimes the workers stayed more locally, such as on little McFarland Island that sits within Boothbay Harbor.

Just visible through the fog, two people walk up a dock from a boat.

Some houses on an island can be seen through fog.

Although the fog was fairly constant in the morning, during the day the sun did sometimes burn off portions of the fog. That allowed for some photographs with more variety, with fog coming and going and rolling.

A 2-mast sailboat is in water with fog obscuring the distance.

Blue water is in front of a fog-shrouded island.

Many birds are flying over the water and in front of a sailing boat, with a bank of fog behind them.

Sky can be seen above, but fog is near the harbor water.

Bands of fog can be seen around islands in the distance, but the rest of the scene is clear.

Here is a comparison of the view from the inn itself. First Wednesday morning's fog, and then the morning we were leaving (Friday).

The lawn and chairs of Topside Inn and some of the Boothbay Harbor buildings can be seen but the water is hidden by fog.
