Tuesday was moving day. We packed up and headed South down the Maine coast. Between Bucksport and Prospect is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. There is an observatory, but unfortunately that was not open when we were there.
The old bridge is still standing (but blocked off at the ends).
Immediately on the other (southern) side of the bridge is Fort Knox. Not of course the famous Fort Knox, which is in Kentucky. Construction of this fort started in 1844, and continued intermittently for 25 years. This is a view of the fort from across the river:
And this is the view from the fort looking back over to Bucksport:
At the fort itself:
After leaving Fort Knox, we stopped at Fort Point State Park. This point is the location of the remnants of Fort Pownal, which was a British fort destroyed back in the Revolutionary War. There are only earthenworks left from the fort. The point also has a lighthouse, appropriately called Fort Point Light. Anne loved the mailbox.
Our last stop this day, before the inn, was the lovely Pemaquid lighthouse. We have visited this lighthouse many times since.
