Southport Island sits off of Boothbay Harbor, connected by a bridge. Of the tip of the island is Cuckold Light. (There are pictures from 2022 here, and a couple from 2016 here.) For a while an inn opened up in the lighthouse building, but that closed prior to the pandemic. The light is still in use, but the adjacent building is looking worse for wear.
It is still an impressive lighthouse, particularly at sunrise.
The sea smoke shines in the morning sun. (In case you aren't familiar with it, sea smoke is caused by the very cold air passing over the warmer water. In this case the air was -4° F.)
Speaking of impressive, the light in the morning can be very pretty, sometimes providing the 'famous' sky-blue-pink color.
Even in January working boats such as ferries and lobster boats are out on the water.
A few more morning pictures from the Newagen Town Landing, which is the viewing point for the lighthouse. When we were there the morning we left to go home, a young man had driven an hour to see the sunrise despite the cold and very windy weather.
Looking southwest reveals Seguin Light, about 7.5 miles away. It does not look that far!
Now you see it ...
and now you don't.
Newagen Inn was quiet, but if you look closely you can see some tracks in the snow.
On a day when we decided to take sunset pictures there, we arrived a bit before the sunset.
Fortunately braving the cold weather was worth it since the sunset was pretty that day.
Cuckold Light, reflecting the last light of the day.
We will continue on a new page for more Southport pictures.
